El Salvador weather is classified as tropical. Which is by no means a surprise, since this small in size country is situated in the tropical zone, and most specifically in the Pacific coast of Central America. El Salvador weather is characterised by its two distinctive seasons (a dry season and a wet season) and the rather insignificant variation in temperatures they experience.

With annual average temperatures ranging 25°C to 29°C, the lowlands close to the Pacific Ocean are El Salvador’s hottest areas; understandably, the mountainous regions experience the coolest condition in the county, with temperatures sometimes approaching freezing, although predominantly hovering around 12°C to 23°C. However, because of the country’s location, weather in El Salvador can occasionally take a turn towards more extreme conditions, with temperature reaching peaks of 38°C.

Locally known as invierno, El Salvador’s rainy season coincides with winter, running between May to October. Although temperatures remain mild throughout and close to the country’s annual average, rainfalls are heavy and frequented, falling in the afternoon in the shape of heavy downpours, often resulting from low pressure over the Pacific. Almost all of El Salvador’s rainfall occurs during the winter season, often reaching highs of 200 centimetres. Rainfalls are heavier in the southern-facing mountain slopes, and significantly less in protected areas and the central plateau, who nevertheless still manage to receive generous amounts. Although hurricanes are often a problem for the Pacific region countries, they very rarely make an impact either on El Salvador weather or the country’s terrain.

Identified locally as summer or verano, El Salvador’s dry season extends from November to April. During this period, northeast trade winds prevail bringing along dry, hot and hazy air.
